Why is there anything at all? The existence of a universe is not explained by describing how it began.
A life-permitting, understandable universe is at least less surprising if reality has a rational source.
Consciousness, reason, and morality each sit awkwardly in a picture that starts with mindless matter.

◇ The case against

No god-of-the-gaps. "Science hasn't explained X" is never, by itself, evidence for God.
Who made God, and what is "nothing"? The physicist's nothing may not be true nothing, and a necessary being is its own puzzle.
Suffering and divine hiddenness are real evidence pushing the other way, and they have to be counted too.

Strict materialism is plausible but not established. That reality includes something beyond matter is a live, serious possibility. That this something is a personal God is possible, not established at this stage.

If you read nothing else

The door is open. It is not proof.

We cannot argue "science can't explain it, therefore God," and the reverse is just as false. Several features of reality remain real clues, naturalism has serious answers, and theism carries real costs. Neither side gets to declare victory. But the supernatural cannot be ruled out by definition, so the investigation continues.
